No Longer a "Young Woman"...

Last Sunday, I was released as the Mia Maid Adviser in Young Women. It's definitely bitter sweet for me because part of me doesn't mind a change, but then another huge part of me is going to miss being with the girls each week! They are so amazing! Plus, I was hoping to hang in there for a few more months because KateLynn will be starting YW come Dec. Oh well...

Since this past Wed. was our last activity, Bonnie & I wanted to go out with a bang! We had already had an idea of doing an ice cream bar of some sort, since I had already done the decorations for Levi's class ice cream party. We wanted to have a spiritual message about choices & how we have so many "good" choices to choose from in life. Most of the time we think about choices being "good" vs. "evil." However, a lot of the times those aren't the choices we have to make. The choices we are asked to make a lot comes down to "good" vs. "good" or "good" vs. "better." Sometimes making the choice of "good" vs. "better" is harder to do than "good" vs. "evil!" Making the 'better' choice is what ultimately leads us closer to our Heavenly Father & what makes us more like our Savior! OK, that was my quick chopped up version of the 15 min. spiritual thought, but hopefully you get the idea. We had all of this planned, but then we found out we would be released, so we decided to kick the decorations up a notch...here is what we had:

Decorations:
Marina helped me come up with the name for our ice cream parlor: "YW (Young Women) Delights" I designed this ice cream logo for our parlor. Can you tell it's the YW's torch on an ice cream cone? You can't see it but the bottom reads "...Where the choices are endless!"The chalkboard sign I drew for the entryway:
I'm no artist, but I normally draw better than this...however, drawing in chalk on a ripply display board is not easy!Don't we look cute (scary) in our 'soda jerk' outfits?!Our setup:
The bar held all of the treats & drinks, the table was decorated with tissue paper ice cream sundaes, & the island was covered with a canopy over the ice cream bar...Bonnie & I in front of the refreshment bar:Get a little closer... ;)
Notice the cupcake liner name tag that I made for us...you can't see Bonnie's.I made confetti cupcakes to go with the theme:Yummy cream puffs! My kids are all cream puffed out, so I had these in my freezer & needed to clear them out!Lime Water:
I hate flavored water, but the limes matched my color scheme...anal, I know! No fear, I had another pitcher of plain water.I made 'flags' for these straws. Aren't they adorable? They had our parlor logo on them...Here are my cute glasses that I've collected. It's hard to see them in this photo, but I got several comments about them. Where did I get them from you ask? Hmmm...don't tell the bishop, but they are Starbucks Frappuccino bottles. I went to the grocery store & bought 10 4pks just so I could have the cute bottles!!! I've never claimed to have any sense! I was waiting to run into someone from church..LOL I had a hard time getting rid of the coffee because I didn't know anyone who drinks coffee. I finally came up with an idea to dump them all out into a glass pitcher & put them in the teacher's lounge at school. Problem solved, the teachers downed them! :)Here is the tissue paper ice cream that I used to decorate the table:Topping Bar:
I saw different blogs that had used canopies for their party decor, & I knew I had to have one. It would be perfect! So, I told/asked Jim if he would make me one to fit on top of Bonnie's island. He made the frame for me & then it was up to me to make the fabric canopy. No big deal except I don't know how to sow, nor do I own a sowing machine. However, I am the queen of hot glue, so presto...I hot glued all of the strips of fabric just like sowing!!Side View:Another angle:
Not bad, not bad...Toppings:We inner twined Christmas lights through the toppings:Here is a close up of the labels I made for the toppings:Whipped Cream:Strawberries, Gummie Worms:Coconut, Sprinkles, Pineapple:Chocolate Chips, Marshmallows, Oreos:Cherries:Caramel & Fudge Sauce:Bananas:Chocolate Hazelnut Piroulines:I put out some colored ice cream cones because they matched:Ice Cream:
Notice my matching ice cream scoops...not the best ones, but they look good!Cups:
To keep things moving & to look cute, I had some of my 'helpers' tie the spoons to the cups with a ribbon. Here are the cups lined up for the ice cream sundaes:Getting ready to get started:The YW filing in:After our spiritual message it was time to eat!Me scooping up some ice cream:
Vanilla or Neapolitan?Working hard...Feeding the masses :)I told Hunter he could come with me this time. Here he is getting his ice cream...Eat up...Yum!Leaders:
This sums up my time serving with Bonnie...Fun & Laughs! We love the gospel, we enjoy the gospel, & we have fun with the gospel...who said being a "follower of Christ" means you have to lose your personality & sense of humor! Bonnie was trying to shove a cream puff in my face...priceless!The other 2 advisers that were in YW too (Laurels & Beehives):Games:
We played a couple of games with the girls. The 1st was kind of like Cranium. You chose a slip of paper from one of 3 envelopes. You either had to act it out, draw/sculpt, or hum the word/phrase depending on which envelope you chose from.Upstairs the girls had to write a word or phrase on a slip of paper and throw it in a bowl. Then, they used those slips of paper to play charades with. It was lots of fun! This was a perfect evening & finale to my time in Young Women!!! These girls have been a great blessing to me & serving with Bonnie has been amazing!!! I wouldn't have changed a thing....

Pinewood Derby 2011

Jan. 25th, 2011

This was Levi's 1st pinewood derby, so he didn't know what to expect. He wasn't overly excited about it because I think he didn't realize how much fun he was going to have. At the pack meeting that the boys got their derby car kits, it was stressed how important it was for the boys to do the cars & not the adults! I wonder if there has been an issue with this... =) We took these instructions to heart and made Levi do everything to make his car! So what does Levi build with best?....LEGOS! That's right, he made his car out of Legos! There's a man in our ward that volunteered his workshop to any of the boys who wanted to use it for their derby cars. Levi jumped right on this...Levi measuring & marking his block of wood:Now he gets to cut it. Dad showed him how. What's with the "open mouth" when working or drawing? Levi always does this. It must help him concentrate...Dad showing him how to blow off the wood dust:Alright, Levi, you're on your own:Getting his technique down: Blow!Levi sanding the base of his car:We even took him to Lowes for a derby demo that they were doing...it was pretty neat! They talked about little "tricks" to help the car go faster:One trick was to sand the notches off of the nails, so that's what we're doing:I volunteered to do the refreshments for the night. Here is the table that I decorated & the treats:The refreshment table:Here are the Twinkie "derby cars" that I made for the boys: I put gummie bears on top...The cake I made for everyone else: Hunter was so afraid he wasn't going to get his cars back =)Showing off my 'cars'My family always supporting me: although Hunter looks tired... They had a photo backdrop setup so they could take a picture of each scout with their cars when they came in. What a great idea! The full view of the track. I've never seen such a fancy track! It recorded the boys time down to the hundredth of a second & showed 1st, 2nd, 3rd, & 4th place for each race. Very accurate & awesome!Levi's fans!
I was so busy doing refreshments that I wasn't able to do a better job with our shirts. But I couldn't not do anything so I printed off our paper "pit crew" signs to show our support.Logan looks like a rag doll:I love Logan's little mini sign! He was so tiny here...Hunter holding up his sign to cheer on Levi:Levi & his best friend:Levi weighing in his car:It was a little too heavy, but that is the beauty of a "Lego" car...he just took off a few pieces and he was good to go!After the boys weighed in, they were given a racing schedule & time sheet. This was such a good idea! The boys knew when they were supposed to race because they each had their own schedule & they paid attention because they had to record their own race times. (The official race times were still kept by one adult, but it kept the boys busy with something to do)Getting their "pit passes" so they can enter the race: (This was just for fun)The boys thought it was cool to get a special pass!Levi's officially checked in now...putting his car on his number block:Looking over his race schedule to see which races he will be participating in. Because of the fancy track, we didn't have to do elimination brackets. Each boy got to race 4 heats. Their times were kept & averaged out (dropping the lowest time) to see who had the best times. The fans had to stay behind the flags: Putting his car on the track:Watching the race intensely! Levi came in 2nd every race...He was the fastest one down the track several times, but once it hit the flat surface, his car couldn't sustain the speed. (arrow dynamics?)Recording his race times:After the boys raced a heat, they were able to take their car to the "pit stop" to make any adjustments they wanted. Levi putting some more graphite on his wheels: The lineup of cars:Levi getting his award:The boys each got a "trophy" car stand & an award. Levi's car was the "best engineered"Time for some refreshments! The cake was so good! I did black & white stripes because my attempt at checkered board didn't turn out...This is how the shirts should be done! I'll get it together next year...
This is my favorite family...I love them! When I said be sexy, this is what I got...ScArY! LOLOur turn:Can we pull off a crazy shot? Honey, that doesn't look too crazy? Jim thinks we're nuts! But we had a great time!
